How to care for gold-plated jewellery

How to wear, clean and store 18k gold-plated sterling silver: what to avoid, how to wipe it, and why to take it off before showering or swimming.

Gold plating is like a petal: fine, and happiest with gentle hands. Your pieces are nickel-free and hypoallergenic, and the plating is water-resistant and resistant to colour change. Keep them away from water, perfume and friction and they keep their warm colour for longer.

How to wear gold-plated jewellery every day

  • Put your jewellery on last. Apply perfume, body lotion, sunscreen and hairspray first, and let them dry.
  • Take it off first. Remove your pieces before showering, bathing, swimming (sea or pool), exercising, cleaning, cooking with your hands, and before sleeping.
  • Keep it away from chemicals. Chlorine, salt water, household cleaners, hand sanitiser and acetone can dull the plating and the stones.
  • Avoid knocks and pulling. Rings can scratch against hard surfaces; hand chains can catch on knitwear and bag straps. Put them on and take them off gently.

Can I shower with gold-plated jewellery?

Please take it off first. Water, soap and shampoo wear the plating faster.

Can I swim with my jewellery?

No, take it off before the sea or the pool: salt and chlorine dull the plating and the stones.

How to clean gold-plated jewellery

  • Wipe your pieces after wearing them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • If needed, use a cloth barely dampened with lukewarm water, then dry immediately and completely.
  • Do not use silver dips, polishing pastes, abrasive polishing cloths, toothpaste or ultrasonic cleaners: they can remove the gold plating.

How to store your jewellery

  • Store each piece on its own, so that pieces do not scratch each other and chains do not tangle.
  • Keep them in a dry place, away from bathrooms and direct sunlight.
  • Close hand chains before storing them.

How long does gold plating last?

It depends on how often you wear a piece, on friction and on your skin.

  • Water-resistant, not for swimming. The plating resists water, but salt, chlorine and long baths wear it faster: take your pieces off before the sea, the pool or the bath.
  • Gold plating wears with time. Rings, which touch everything we touch, show wear sooner than hand chains.
  • Rhodium-plated bands. The silver-tone bands of Yellow Lady and Chamilla are rhodium-plated: care for them in the same way, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth.
  • Stones: check from time to time that the stones are secure. If one feels loose, stop wearing the piece and write to us.
